President Iohannis, EC’s Timmermans discuss implementation of Green Deal, Romania’s Schengen admission

 

According to the Presidential Administration, talks focused on the challenges of implementing the European Green Deal, the involvement of the European Union and implicitly of Romania in the fight against climate change, education on climate change and the environment, as well as on the major challenge represented by the war in Ukraine and its consequences in various areas.

 

During the meeting with the high European official, President Iohannis highlighted Romania's involvement in managing the effects of the war in Ukraine and emphasized the need for European support for the neighboring country, but also for the Republic of Moldova, to continue as long as necessary.

 

President Iohannis pointed out that Romania will continue to support national, European and international actions and policies aimed at combating climate change and improving the quality of the environment, and presented Romania's efforts to cut polluting emissions and its stance on maintaining a balanced energy mix that maximises the use of indigenous energy sources. In this regard, the head of the state insisted on the importance and role of nuclear energy and natural gas in ensuring the green energy transition.

 

The Executive EC Vice-President thanked President Iohannis for his engagement with these themes of major interest, including those related to environmental and climate education, and the promotion of an integrated approach by Romania in terms of green transition, the cited source informed.

 

Frans Timmermans also underlined the importance of Romania making use of all European instruments and funds, including the NRRP and the REPowerEU facility, for investments in the green economy and ensuring the climate transition.

 

The high European official expressed his appreciation for Romania's role and support to both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.

 

On this occasion, Timmermans conveyed the European Commission's "firm" support for Romania's admission to the Schengen Area.

 

President Klaus Iohannis also had a meeting on Friday with leader of the European People's Party, Manfred Weber.
